Being crowned is a complete stretch, but consider that I had spent $5 on a Dolby Cinema ticket.
Ever since I first picked up Minecraft, I had one hope: a video game movie based on Minecraft. Little did I know that years later, that hope would become a reality.
Unfortunately, critics had nothing really good to say about A Minecraft Movie. There is one thing that I am upset about, but I won’t spoil that until the end. So first, let’s get our Steve faces on, and yearn for the mines of my honest thoughts.
I… AM STEVE.
This singular line by Jack Black had accumulated a ton of memes surrounding it. Even the cinemas wooped and hollered when this iconic line hit the silver screens. We would follow that with another hit. CHICKEN JOCKEY! This line also had people going ballistic when it hit the silver screens. But, enough with the lines.
CREATIVITY IN THIS WORLD IS KEY TO SURVIVAL.
Minecraft has a huge focus for creativity while also surviving, so this line isn’t far off from wrong. My first memory of a Minecraft spark was in, get this, a creative world. That ended up in me building my skins for the fun of it. I even made some sonic-themed character skins that people could equip. That spark has mostly fizzled out but I blame my PC’s death on that. Minecraft was quintessentially the getaway for me… up until 2021, where I picked up Rocket League again.
WE’RE READY. LET’S GO SAVE THE OVERWORLD!
Now, what is my rating of A Minecraft Movie? Well, on my rating scale, I determine a few factors, and A Minecraft Movie flipped every lever and was able to power enough redstone to reach my Nether-ending spark.
MY RATING OF A MINECRAFT MOVIE (ON A SCALE OF 10):
8.4/10
It really, really impressed me. There is one set of scenes that feel… off… compared to the mainline of the movie, but aside from that, I too can scream the iconic “CHICKEN JOCKEY!” and be proud. Additional points for the reference to a mod for the game.
WE MINE, THEN WE CRAFT.
Now, I crowned this movie. Why? A Minecraft Movie didn’t have any scenes where I felt uncomfortable and had to leave the room until the scene played out. That’s compared to the critically acclaimed Sonic The Hedgehog 3, where I did leave the room during one scene.
I liked this movie. You may as well, as long as you can be fine with a few caveats.
